In either case, someone else will have to "tell" you that you are. And both have a variety of levels. Everyone in their lifetime hopes that they are appreciated and/or accepted in some way, big or small. And there are some of us that find some way to make a huge impact in the world, if that's how you define being accomplished.

What I hope for myself, is to be appreciated. And maybe there is some level of accomplishment in that, being able to fully put others before myself, in a world that says otherwise.

Only time and prayer can tell...

Acceptance is a basic human desire. A fair share of people don't seek it from society at large, but from their peers. Beyond that, there are people who will do what do, no matter if it results in acceptance or not.

accomplished

Accomplishment implies success of some sort, which doesn't account for the issue of trying. Success is admirable, but failure, in many cases, can be just as important, especially as a vehicle for learning. Also, a person's definition of success may be vastly different than another person's. For example, compare an accomplished musician to an accomplished activist. It's too difficult to separate personal goals from altruistic goals, or developmental goals from intellectual goals, etc.

accepted vs accomplished

Even though it might be better to be experienced as opposed to accomplished (to take account for failures as well as successes), I would rather be accomplished than accepted... at least in terms of this world. What is it to be accomplished before God, but not accepted by Him? In worldly terms, I feel it's better to have done something and not be accepted than to be accepted for doing nothing. It's an extreme way to look at it, but it's a hard comparison.

the first example that came to mind is a homeless outreach. you're doing it for others and not because you'll be appreciated. because you and i both know that, sometimes, there is one person who is unappreciative of the help that we do...but we don't mind that they don't because that's not why we're there for. and if you think about it, none of us have gotten any trophies for feeding the homeless and we don't expect trophies at all. it's just our duty as children of God to help out our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.
and this example, once again, goes back to how you said accomplishments is considered "doing things...by our own or socially established standards". and homeless outreaches can be considered as "wanting to do things that could potentially produce appreciation" even though we don't expect appreciation...or at least we shouldn't.

this is a very complex issue.... how about we play chess instead? or how about we play with some flashy lights and some sirens...and cause a racket?

that's what i thought at first. you shouldn't work to be appreciated. but then i thought about it differently.

if you look at the motivation you have for accomplishment and the motivation to be appreciated, it's different. accomplishment is usually associated with doing things for yourself and by your own or socially established standards. with appreciation, if you think about it as wanting to do things that could potentially produce appreciation, not necessarily for the appreciation itself, you're doing things for others; serving others. so i guess it depends on how you look at it...

that's a toughie... it's like asking, "would you rather be a boy or a girl?". or, perhaps, "the chicken or the egg". but i think i will choose...

some would say that being appreciated is good. it's true. we all want/need to be recognized for our hard work. and that's fine. but once you expect appreciation for everything that you do, it becomes a problem. if you have accomplished something, and you take great pride in knowing that you've done things, then appreciation would not even matter. some people will feel unaccomplised if they don't get praises for their work...they think that because people don't appreciate them, that their work does not matter, or it's not good enough.

and that's my 17 cents...and keep the change too.
